Boardwalk Bar part 13
Today's plan seemed obvious- continue on the left panel, all those people around the band or the bar. And so that's what I did. I had started the people near the band last time, and this time I finished all the dancers and did all the people around the bar. Did the bar top as well. Some things were intentionally left black, but mostly I cut out everything. I still haven't done the final cutting inside the bar, or on the ceiling of the space, and I don't know yet if I am going to do those next or start doing the people in the right side panel. I'll figure that out next time I am there. Because I just worked on the one side today, that is the only thing I photographed. That can be seen below. If you want to see the right side panel or the whole thing, go back to the last post about this piece.
Jeanne was still on vacation, so word about the end of the show and how it went will still have to wait. Luckily I don't need her to keep working on this block.
For music today I went back to the storage box and ended up doing things with an 80's theme. I started with a copied disc, Singles- 45's and Under by Squeeze. This is a compilation album, essentially a collection of early singles up to the initial end of the group, and one of the most popular albums of the era. That may be the reason I didn't own a copy myself- no need, since I heard the songs constantly on the radio or coming from other rooms on my freshman hall. (Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits is another album in this category; it seemed that everyone around me owned a copy so I never bothered to get one) The Squeeze album did quite well, going platinum both in the US and the UK. All I know is that it has just about every song by the band that I know, and came out in the early 80's, so that I tend to associate the album with the 80's. (technically, a few of the earliest songs date back to the 70's, but the album came out when I was in high school, and was hugely popular when I was in college, all in the 80's) I had room on the disc after the Squeeze ended, so I ended up putting a bunch of songs from the Grosse Point Blank soundtrack. That 90's film was set at a 10 year high school reunion, and the female lead was a DJ doing an 80's themed radio show for the occasion (it was the 10 year reunion for the DJ as well), so the soundtrack is heavy with 80's songs. To be fair, the producers got a few things wrong, and some of the songs are from the 90's, including a few songs I copied for my disc, but the sentiment was there. Besides, I followed it up with another 80's album, a six song Live disc from the Smithereens. This short live collection dates from a performance at the Ritz in 1986 and was part of the Restless Performance Series, the only other thing from which I have ever seen in the live one disc Dream Syndicate album I have and have written about on this blog back in April of 2020 if you want to go looking for it. I'm not sure why this Smithereens disc ended up in this box, and not on the shelf with other Smithereens albums, but it worked out well in this case, as I had it to listen to today. I have a lot of music from before the 80's, and a lot of more recent music as well, so that decade is just another long ago time that I lived through. Still, it was all good music to work to.
By the way, I did see Squeeze live years later up in Fairfield, CT. My brother was going to school there, and working spotlights at the campus arena. He arranged for tickets and had me drive our friend Jimmy Brown up there for the occasion. Whenever the band played one of their "new" songs, everyone ignored them. When they played something from the Singles album, everyone got up, danced, cheered, and sang along. I told you it was a popular album.
