Boardwalk Bar part 26
I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to work on today. If my new proof was dry enough, I'd start coloring that. If not, start drawing the next block. I brought materials for both options to the Studio this morning. As it turned out, the new proof was completely dry, so I decided to go with that. I put the new proof on the table, and prepared a bunch of the shadow blue- indigo, white, and cobalt teal. Normally I go the traditional route and start with light colors, but I know I need a lot of the shadow color, so I started with that. I put it on the ceiling where appropriate, and on the back wall. Below shows today's work:
This may dry a little lighter, but I won't know until the next time I am there. I saw no leaks today, so that is good. I did make one little mistake, starting to put some of the shadow color in a place between palm fronds, a place that should be light. In the short term I used dry clean brushes to soak up as much as I could, and left it a light blue, which should be similar to the color that will go there eventually. But that will wait until next time. I left the piece to dry up on my wall tack board, put away everything else and headed home. Around that same time I heard a huge noise from upstairs- it was the comedy/improv group that has taken over the building, at least according to Jeanne. I guess they were taking a break for lunch. Up on the first floor they were a crowd I had to push through to reach the front door, and my freedom.
For music today I was listening to a disc from my rock/pop book, Sonic Youth's breakthrough 1988 album Daydream Nation. I wrote about this back on the blog in March of 2020 if you want to know more. The reason I listened to this today was that last week I saw band founder/bassist/vocalist Kim Gordon on a late night talk show promoting her latest music. Back in the 80's. Sonic Youth was pretty much a punk band, famous for noise and other highly amplified guitars, sometimes played with baseball bats and other unusual slide choices, but this new Gordon song was very subdued, and if I remember correctly, she had no guitar but just stood at a microphone. To be fair, Kim Gordon would be in her 70's now, and maybe being a punk guitar god is a younger person's pursuit.
